Chicago Shamrock Shuffle
The sprint down Michigan Avenue was my favorite section. Not because the race was almost over, but because the road opened up, the crowd was roaring, and the skyline rose to the right.
My First Shamrock
This was my first Shamrock Shuffle race in Chicago. Overall, a really good vibe.

Group Run
I ran this as part of a team with my school running club. As much as I love solo runs with just my own music, having a group to run to after you cross the finish line is its own pleasure.
Signing Up
By February 2023, the Chicago Shamrock Shuffle was starting to creep up on the calendar. Many members of the Chicago Booth Running Club had already registered, so we decided to make it a team event — complete with group photos and an after-race brunch. The race offered multiple options, including a 1-mile run, a 2-mile walk, and the signature 8K. Naturally, being runners, we all signed up for the 8K.
Race Day
Like other shorter races I've done, I didn't train extensively for this one. The Shamrock Shuffle is known for being a fun, casual kickoff to the spring running season. The course would start in the Loop and head north, so on race morning I parked at my school and jogged toward the Chicago Museum campus to meet up with my teammates. The sun was just beginning to rise.
By around eight, runners were gathering in their corrals, and we joined them. There were about ten of us, though we weren't planning to run together — everyone had their own pace.
The race began at 8:30 AM on Columbus Drive near Grant Park. We headed north, dipped under the bridge, passed my graduate school, and continued toward Grand Avenue with spectators lining the route. After turning left on Grand, we hit the first mile marker. The stretch from Columbus to Grand was wide and open, making it easy to navigate around other runners.
Soon we reached State Street and headed south, passing the iconic Chicago Theater and the second mile marker. The crowds here were loud and energetic, giving the race that classic downtown Chicago feel.
We continued west on Wacker Drive toward the river, then looped onto Harrison Street toward Michigan Avenue, passing the third and fourth mile markers. The intersection of Harrison and Michigan had an incredible amount of energy — easily the loudest part of the course.

There was even a chance of spotting a familiar face in the crowd. We turned left on Roosevelt Road, climbed the only notable incline, and then made our way back to Columbus Drive for the final push north toward the finish line near Buckingham Fountain — a signature Shamrock Shuffle landmark.
After the Race
We had reservations at Beatrix for brunch, so after finishing we walked over, waited for our table, celebrated the run, and eventually went our separate ways.
What did I think of the Shamrock Shuffle? Loved it. The green St. Patrick's Day theme makes it fun, the route is fantastic, and because it takes place right as winter transitions into spring, the weather is usually perfect.
